One of the most important decisions a home gardener can make is in selecting the best site for their garden. There are many factors to consider that include light, soil characteristics, drainage and previous activity that was on the site. And a gardener can’t forget human accessibility and distance to water sources. After selecting a potentially good site, soil testing is also important for the home gardener to be able to amend soils to be most productive for vegetable crops.
This publication will walk readers step by step through site selection and soil testing and provides links to testing at the UT Soil, Pest, and Plant Center.
