Plants, like people, need essential nutrients to grow, survive and thrive in our gardens. However, unlike us, they are able to obtain the essential nutrients they need from soil, water and air. There are many factors that influence the nutrition of plants and many ways that gardeners can support good nutrition in their garden plants. This publication will provide information on essential plant nutrients, the important of pH management as well as different types of fertilizer materials. Practical management aspects are explained and information on calculations needed for fertilizer application in the home garden are given. Fertilization practices before and at planting as well as in-season side dressing are explained.
